At the foot of Mount Alexander and a half-hour south of Bendigo, the town of Harcourt is best known for its apple orchards, many of them planted with heritage and cider varieties.
Beyond its crunchy stars, people come to the town for La Larr Ba Gauwa Park. Located just outside Harcourt, it is home to 34 kilometres of world-class mountain bike trails, but there are also walking tracks and a historical oak forest that was planted by tanners who needed the acorns. Another walk takes you to a peak 350 metres above the surrounding area in Mount Alexander Regional Park. Here, you’ll discover a stunning outcrop of the granite known as Dog Rocks. They’re on the West Ridge Walking Track, as is Shepherd’s Flat Lookout, which looks out over Harcourt and the region.
Don’t miss Harcourt Produce and General Store. Yes, you can stock up on fresh food, preserves and wine, but owner Annette Larson has turned it into a destination for wholesome, delicious food created using the finest local produce. Another good option for toasties, pastries and Code Black coffee on weekdays (it closes at 1pm) is Coolstore.
In March, to celebrate its favourite crop, Harcourt hosts Applefest, featuring produce, food, wine, arts and stalls.
