Maldon tells the story of early Australia with a famed, well-preserved streetscape reflecting what life was like long ago. Don’t let the old-fashioned façade fool you, though. Even though the National Trust named Maldon a notable town in 1965, the first such classification in Australia, there are fresh faces behind the heritage doors breathing new life into the community.
Step into Cascade Art Gallery, located in a former Gothic Revival church, where you’ll find inspiring works from established artists. Stop for a sweet treat at the old-fashioned Maldon Lolly Shop. Perhaps you’d prefer bread, pies or pastries? Maldon Bakery is the oldest continuously running bakery in Australia, and its Scotch oven was the first brick structure in Maldon.
Another long-running local food business is Warral Maldon, where the same family has been tending bees and extracting their honey since 1896. Drop by the gift shop for honey products and beeswax.
Discover the history of the town at Maldon Museum or climb to the top of Mt Tarrengower Lookout Tower for incredible views.
This is a town that loves to celebrate, so book a weekend stay and enjoy live music, arts and community events during June and July’s Maldon in Winter, the Maldon Folk Festival in November, Goldfields Gothic – Festival of Dark Ideas in August, or the Maldon Easter Fair.
