Visit Macedon Ranges

The major attraction in the Macedon Ranges is spectacular Hanging Rock. Erupting from the earth and made famous by the novel and movie Picnic at Hanging Rock, it is a magnet for visitors interested in both its cultural cachet and natural beauty.

But to visit Hanging Rock alone would be to miss some of the region’s other high points. Mount Macedon is one, both literally and figuratively. During summer, its heights offer a respite from the heat, while in winter there can be snow at its peak. Spring is a favourite season for visitors, with many magnificent local gardens opening to display their fine flowers; autumn brings the golds, red and yellows of turning leaves.

The town of Kyneton, once a coach stop on the way to the goldfields, has undergone a renaissance, with retro boutique motels, incredible restaurants, antique stores and independent artisans lining historical Piper Street. Beyond this tempting thoroughfare, there are serene walks along the river, through a mineral springs reserve and the botanic gardens.

Woodend is a great base, especially for those without a car since the train station is on the edge of town and an easy stroll from restaurants, the popular Holgate Brewhouse and a slew of boutique shops.

Explore further and you’ll find vineyards with cellar doors around the town of Lancefield, the popular Romsey Ecotherapy Park in Romsey, and the striking Malmsbury Viaduct in Malmsbury. There’s more than enough to turn your head for a few days.
