While the bush has an appeal all its own, some of the more manicured options in the region offer respite from the heat in summer, a symphony of colour as the leaves fall in autumn, blooms aplenty in spring and a moody backdrop to long walks in winter.
Climb the 77 steps to the memorial tower at Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens for views over Daylesford. Take a scenic walk along the Campaspe River at Kyneton Botanic Gardens. Have a picnic beside Lake Joanna at Castlemaine Botanic Gardens, or stroll around Malmsbury Botanic Gardens, one of the oldest public gardens in Victoria.
Perched on Mount Macedon, Forest Glade Garden is a beautifully manicured private estate with four themes: an English selection, Japanese garden, fern gully and rolling lawns, all dotted with sculptures, fountains, pergolas and ponds. Further up the road is Duneira Estate, a home and garden dating to 1872. One of its big attractions is the 150 mature rhododendrons, which are spectacular when in bloom from late September to early November.
