Step out

Trek through the region’s spectacular surrounds, from the magnificent Hanging Rock to Mount Franklin’s awesome volcanic crater. There’s a huge variety of walks to suit all ages and levels of fitness.

The La Gerche Forest Walk is an easy loop through serene, historical nursery plantations within Creswick Regional Park. If you want something longer, follow the Domino Rail Trail from the heritage-listed Trentham Railway Station, through the Wombat State Forest, finishing at Lyonville. Give yourself two-and-a-half hours to go one way.

Download the audio experience before taking on the Murmuring Walk at manmade Sanitorium Lake at Mount Macedon. Put on your headphones and step into a contemplative space guided by a multilayered soundtrack of vocals and poetry.

Challenge yourself a little more on the Hanging Rock Summit Walk, which becomes steeper the higher you go, but is worth it for the views. Start early in the day to take on the Macedon Ranges Walk, an almost 19-kilometre hike from Macedon Railway Station and taking in Mount Macedon Memorial Cross, Camels Hump and Sanatorium Lake.
