Falls and flowers

The discovery of gold in Victoria had an interesting side effect: sailors deserted their vessels, known as jumping ship, to seek their fortune in the mines. Sailors Falls, just south of Daylesford, is thought to have been named after these rogue seamen. These days, you can view the spectacular twin falls from the picnic area, just a short stroll from the car park. The water then runs through rock pools before becoming Sailors Creek, which flows through Hepburn Regional Park. Check out the information displays, the remnants of mining equipment and the mineral water pumps – don’t forget to bring your water bottle and collect some for later.

Once you’ve enjoyed the spectacle of the waterfall, head to Sault. Surrounded by fields of flowers, this destination restaurant serves a seasonally changing menu that showcases the fabulous regional produce, much of it grown within their own kitchen gardens.
