In the Central Goldfields, just east of Maryborough, is Carisbrook, a rural town rich in history and natural beauty. Visit Carisbrook Log Jail, Victoria’s oldest. This small prison was built in the 1850s and held some notorious bushrangers, including Mad Dog Morgan and Frank McCallum (Captain Melville). It was nicknamed The Logs by local resident Tilly Aston, a blind writer and teacher, who was born in Carisbrook in 1873. Tilly successfully lobbied to get blind people the right to vote and access to the pension. There’s a memorial to her in the town on the Pyrenees Highway.
Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the town because there are historical bluestone buildings and ruins all around it, including the grand Junction Lodge Homestead. Take a scenic walk at Brian Downie Conservation Park, where there are gold-mining relics, a gazebo with display signs about the area’s history and geology, and a picnic area.
Otherwise, head to Bland Reserve, where you can walk along Tullaroop Creek (also known as Deep Creek) and go for a swim. When you’re hungry, head to the Britannia Hotel for pizza and pub classics. Or grab a coffee or light snack at Double Dose.
