Welcome, stranger

Where the roads from Maryborough in the south and Bendigo to its east come together, you’ll find the town of Dunolly, steeped in gold-rush history and relaxed country charm. Surrounded by forests and farmland, it’s also home to olive groves and vineyards.

Dunolly’s beautiful main street, Broadway, is lined with heritage buildings and kurrajong trees. Visit the Dunolly Historic Precinct on a self-guided tour and see the impressive town hall and courthouse.

At the Dunolly Goldfields Museum, examine relics of the mining past and a replica of the famous Welcome Stranger – at almost 110 kilograms, it is still the world’s largest alluvial gold nugget ever discovered – found nearby in Moliagul. Today, you can visit the Welcome Stranger obelisk at the nugget’s discovery site. If you’re feeling lucky, prospecting and fossicking is allowed around it at the Moliagul Historic Area.

For a scenic adventure, the Dunolly Cycle Tracks, each of them starting at Dunolly Town Hall and ranging from 14 to 47 kilometres, offer forest rides along signed routes and through old gold-mining towns. When you’re done, grab a bite at Dunolly Bakery, where everything is made fresh daily, or from one of the many local eateries.
